How do you keep your hair wavy/curly after you take out your braids? My hair loses its curls in less than an hour

Keeping your hair wavy or curly after removing braids can be challenging, especially if your hair has a tendency to lose shape quickly. Here are some tips to help maintain those waves or curls for a longer time:

1. Start with Damp Hair

  • Moisture Matters: Begin braiding your hair when it’s slightly damp, not wet. This helps the hair set into the braid pattern better and creates more defined waves or curls when you take them out.
  • Product Application: Before braiding, apply a lightweight mousse or curl-enhancing cream to damp hair. This can help hold the curls once you take out the braids.

2. Use Smaller Braids

  • More Definition: The smaller the braids, the tighter and more defined your curls or waves will be. Consider doing multiple smaller braids instead of larger ones if you want longer-lasting curls.
  • Overnight Braids: Leaving the braids in overnight or for an extended period (like 12-24 hours) can also help the curls set better.

3. Set the Style

  • Use a Setting Spray: After removing the braids, immediately apply a light mist of setting spray or flexible hold hairspray to help lock in the curls without making your hair stiff.
  • Heat Application: If your hair is naturally straight or tends to lose curls quickly, lightly running a diffuser through your hair after unbraiding can help set the waves with a bit of heat.

4. Preserve the Curls

  • Avoid Touching: After you take out your braids, try not to touch your hair too much. Excessive handling can cause the curls to fall flat.
  • Use a Silk or Satin Pillowcase: Sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase helps reduce friction that can flatten curls overnight.
  • Pineapple Technique: Before bed, loosely gather your hair at the top of your head (like a pineapple) to keep the curls intact while you sleep.

5. Refresh the Curls

  • Curl-Reviving Products: If your curls start to fall during the day, spritz them with a curl-refreshing spray or a mix of water and leave-in conditioner to revive them.
  • Scrunching: Gently scrunching your hair with your hands can help bring back some of the definition.

By incorporating these tips into your routine, you should be able to keep your hair wavy or curly for a longer time after removing braids.
